12-Year-Old Victim Was ‘One of a Kind’ in Tumbler Ridge Tragedy

Tumbler Ridge, B.C., remains in mourning following one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history. Among the eight victims killed is 12-year-old Ticaria Lampert, who family members describe as “loving, courageous, humorous, one of a kind.”

The shooting occurred when 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar opened fire at a residence and later at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School before taking her own life. Approximately 25 others were injured in the attack, which has left the small northern British Columbia community devastated.

Remembering Ticaria Lampert

An online fundraiser created to support Ticaria’s family says she was one of seven children being raised by a single mother. The fundraiser describes her as a bright and unique child whose life was tragically cut short.

“Ticaria was such a loving, courageous, humorous, one of a kind kiddo and her life was cut short,” the message reads.

CTV News confirmed her identity with family members. Friends and community members have since been sharing tributes, remembering her kindness, laughter, and vibrant spirit.

Community in Mourning

Police tape remains around the school as investigators continue to piece together what happened. Residents have gathered to support one another, and grief counsellors have been made available to students and families impacted by the tragedy.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to travel to Tumbler Ridge to attend a vigil. In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said he has invited leaders of all federal parties to join him in British Columbia “should they wish to do so.” Details of the visit are being coordinated with local officials.

Investigation Focused on Motive

Authorities say the investigation is now centered on determining why the attack occurred. Former RCMP deputy commissioner Peter German noted that investigators know who carried out the shooting, but the key question remains motive.

Police have confirmed that the shooter was known to authorities and had a history of mental health concerns. Investigators are expected to examine the origin of the firearms used and determine whether anyone else may have played a role in supplying them.

Former homicide detective Mark Mendelson said investigators will also analyze digital activity, including social media and online communications, to determine whether the victims were specifically targeted or whether outside influences contributed to the attack.

As the investigation continues, the focus for many in Tumbler Ridge remains on remembering the victims including 12-year-old Ticaria Lampert and supporting the families whose lives have been forever changed.
