Strong Showing of Saskatchewan Finalists at National Indigenous Tourism Awards
Saskatchewan will be well represented on the national stage at the 2026 Indigenous Tourism Awards, with four finalists recognized for excellence in Indigenous tourism. The finalists were announced by the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) on January 20, marking the province’s highest number of finalists since 2018.
The awards ceremony will take place in Edmonton, Alberta, on February 19, 2026, during the final night of the International Indigenous Tourism Conference.
Saskatchewan Finalists for 2026
The province’s four finalists represent a diverse range of cultural and tourism excellence:
- Pêmiska Tourism – Exceptional Cultural Experience Award
- Wanuskewin Heritage Park – Indigenous Destination Development Award
- Breanna Tait (Wanuskewin Heritage Park) – Outstanding Staff Person Award
- Dakota Dunes Resort – New Operator or Business that Launched a New Experience
These nominations highlight the strength and growth of Indigenous tourism experiences across Saskatchewan, from immersive cultural programming to innovative new tourism offerings.
Government Recognizes Industry Growth
Minister Responsible for Tourism Saskatchewan, Alana Ross, emphasized the importance of Indigenous tourism to the province’s economy and communities.
“The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes the importance of the Indigenous tourism industry in the province and how it creates meaningful economic opportunities for Indigenous entrepreneurs and communities,” Ross said. “With growing demand from domestic and international travellers, these experiences contribute to Saskatchewan’s visitor economy. This number of finalists speaks to the strength of Indigenous attractions and how they contribute to the success of the province’s tourism industry.”
Tourism Saskatchewan CEO Jonathan Potts also praised the finalists for their contributions.
“The Indigenous tourism industry offers an array of authentic cultural experiences across the province that promote education and support reconciliation,” Potts said. “Our organization extends heartfelt congratulations to these deserving finalists who are proudly representing our province.”
Recognizing Excellence in Indigenous Tourism
The Indigenous Tourism Awards are presented annually by ITAC to recognize excellence across the sector. Nominees must be majority Indigenous-owned or operated, ensuring the awards celebrate authentic Indigenous leadership and entrepreneurship in tourism.
From cultural heritage sites and immersive experiences to innovative new tourism ventures, Saskatchewan’s finalists demonstrate the province’s commitment to preserving traditions while fostering economic development.
The winners will be announced on February 19, 2026, in Edmonton, as part of the International Indigenous Tourism Conference.
