Canada Mourns After Deadly Tumbler Ridge School Shooting Leaves 10 Dead

Canada is in mourning after a devastating mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, left 10 people dead, including the suspected gunman. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the tragedy as a “difficult day for the country,” saying the entire nation stands with the grieving community.

Seven victims were killed inside a high school in the small northeastern B.C. mining town on Tuesday. According to the RCMP, two additional individuals were later found dead at a nearby residence connected to the incident. Police confirmed that the suspected shooter died from an apparent self-inflicted injury.

Prime Minister Carney Offers Support

Speaking to reporters before a caucus meeting in Ottawa, Prime Minister Carney appeared visibly emotional as he addressed the country.

“This morning, families in Tumbler Ridge will wake up without someone they love,” he said. “The nation mourns with you. Canada stands by you.”

Carney confirmed he has spoken with British Columbia Premier David Eby and pledged full federal assistance to the province during this crisis.

In response to the tragedy, flags on Parliament Hill have been lowered to half-mast for one week. The Prime Minister is also expected to deliver a formal statement in the House of Commons.

Germany Trip Cancelled

The Prime Minister’s Office announced that Carney has cancelled his scheduled trip to Germany for the Munich Security Conference. Defence Minister David McGuinty, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, and Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon will attend in his place.

A planned federal announcement related to Canada’s new defence industrial strategy has also been postponed.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree is travelling to Tumbler Ridge alongside Premier Eby, while Housing Minister Gregor Robertson and B.C. Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger are also expected to be present in the community.

National Leaders Express Condolences

Political leaders across party lines expressed shock and sorrow over the tragedy.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre called the shooting “devastating,” emphasizing the heartbreak felt by parents across the country. “The fact that this happened at a secondary school makes it even more tragic,” he said, urging Canadians to unite in support of the affected families.

Interim NDP Leader Don Davies, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, and other federal representatives also offered condolences, highlighting the need for compassion and unity during this painful time.

Governor-General Mary Simon released a statement expressing her deepest sympathies to the people of Tumbler Ridge. She thanked first responders for their bravery and confirmed that her official schedule has been suspended in light of the tragedy.

Community in Shock

Tumbler Ridge, a small and tightly connected community, is reeling from the impact of the violence. Leaders acknowledged that tragedies of this scale are rare in Canada, making the shock and grief even more profound.

Parliament is expected to observe a moment of silence, and the House of Commons will suspend regular proceedings following statements from party leaders.

As investigations continue, officials say the immediate focus remains on supporting victims’ families, students, teachers, first responders, and residents coping with the aftermath.

Prime Minister Carney urged Canadians to come together in solidarity.

“We will get through this,” he said. “Right now, it’s a time to support each other, mourn together, and stand united as a nation.”
