Calgarians Invited to Help Shape Future of Green Line LRT Downtown Segment

CALGARY — Residents are being invited to share their views on the design and planning of the Green Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) downtown segment, as The City of Calgary begins public engagement on the critical next phase of the transit project.

The engagement period runs from Feb. 9 to March 2, 2026, and includes opportunities for Calgarians to learn about proposed design concepts and provide feedback that will help shape the Functional Plan for the downtown portion of the Green Line. Input from the public will help inform decisions as the city advances the project beyond preliminary technical planning.

Public engagement activities include an online survey, virtual information sessions scheduled for Feb. 10 and Feb. 28, and in-person drop-in sessions at Memorial Park Library from Feb. 18 to Feb. 22. Details are available on the city’s engagement portal.

The downtown segment concept currently under study focuses on an elevated route between the future Event Centre/Grand Central Station along 10 Avenue S. in the Beltline and 2 Street S.W. downtown. The Functional Plan will help refine the design, validate cost estimates, and identify potential impacts to infrastructure, ensuring broad public support before construction begins.

The Green Line LRT — Calgary’s largest transit expansion — is envisioned as a 46-kilometre north-south light rail line that, when completed, will connect southeast Calgary to the downtown core and beyond, linking into the existing Red and Blue CTrain lines. Public engagement and technical planning are key steps before the downtown segment moves into later design and construction phases.

Officials say the input received during this round of engagement will directly influence design considerations, urban impacts, and the overall experience of the Green Line as a daily service connecting work, school, housing and community destinations.
