Grewal later recalled how challenging those early days were, especially because his English language skills were limited at the time.

His wife Ravneet played an equally important role in the family’s struggle and eventual success. She worked long hours at a Subway restaurant before taking on additional employment as a security guard. Through her workplace connections, Grewal was able to secure similar work opportunities.

The couple often worked exhausting schedules. After completing his overnight security shifts, Grewal would pick up his wife and the two would spend the early morning hours delivering newspapers across their neighbourhood. Rather than viewing the work as a burden, they treated the time together as an opportunity to strengthen their relationship and support one another.

The hardships did not stop there. Grewal also accepted cleaning jobs at a shopping mall, where he swept floors, cleared waste and cleaned washrooms. His wife worked in the mall’s food court, clearing trays and maintaining cleanliness.

According to Grewal, the mall cleaning position paid approximately 13 Canadian dollars per hour, considerably more than some of his other jobs, which paid around eight dollars an hour. Every opportunity to earn extra income was essential as the couple worked tirelessly to build a better future for their family.

Looking back, Grewal says those experiences taught him valuable lessons about determination, humility and hard work. While some people may view such jobs as difficult or unusual, he considers them an important part of his journey and a source of pride.

Over the years, his persistence paid off. Following the success of Phulkari, Grewal established himself as one of Punjabi music’s leading voices. He later expanded into acting, producing and filmmaking, delivering numerous successful projects that strengthened his position in the entertainment industry.

Today, Gippy Grewal is among the most influential figures in Punjabi cinema and music. Alongside his professional accomplishments, he enjoys a happy family life with his wife Ravneet and their three sons — Ekom, Shinda and Gurbaaz.
