CALGARY, Alberta: Calgary police have released new details about a devastating collision involving two city transit buses and several other vehicles in the northeast community of Saddle Ridge that left three people dead and 16 others injured after a natural gas powered bus caught fire and exploded.

The deadly crash occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, in the 800 block of Saddletowne Circle N.E., near 80th Avenue and a neighbourhood fire station.

Investigators provided an updated account of the incident on Friday, October 16, explaining how a series of collisions involving multiple vehicles escalated into a major fire and explosion aboard one of the transit buses.

According to Calgary police, the first transit bus was travelling northbound along Saddletowne Circle when it apparently struck a truck moving in the same direction.

The impact caused the truck to move into an adjacent lane, where it sideswiped a sport utility vehicle before colliding with the rear of a box truck.

Meanwhile, the transit bus continued travelling north and struck the rear of a sedan. The force of that collision pushed the car through an intersection, where it subsequently collided with another truck.

The bus then struck the rear of a second Calgary Transit bus, triggering another collision as the second bus was pushed forward into a separate sedan.

What began as a series of vehicle impacts quickly developed into a deadly emergency when the natural gas tanks aboard the second transit bus ignited.

Police said the resulting fire intensified within seconds, causing an explosion and sending flames through the passenger compartment.

Emergency responders arriving at the scene encountered extensively damaged vehicles, burning wreckage and multiple injured passengers.

Three people who had been travelling aboard the second bus were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police confirmed that two of the victims have been identified, while investigators are continuing efforts to establish the identity of the third person.

Authorities have not publicly released the victims’ names.

The driver of the first transit bus suffered serious injuries described by police as life altering and was transported to hospital for medical treatment.

The driver of the second bus managed to escape the vehicle following the collision.

A total of 16 people were reported injured in the incident, making it one of the most serious transit-related collisions in Calgary in recent years.

Emergency medical personnel transported 10 people to hospital by ambulance, including one individual whose condition was considered life threatening.

A Calgary police officer also suffered minor injuries while responding to the emergency and is now recovering at home.

Police said the drivers of the other vehicles involved either escaped injury or sustained relatively minor injuries.

The collision caused extensive damage to the buses and surrounding vehicles, with the fire adding to the destruction and creating a dangerous situation for passengers, emergency crews and nearby motorists.

The involvement of compressed natural gas tanks has become an important element of the investigation, particularly because of the speed at which the fire developed after the buses collided.

Natural gas powered transit buses are used in public transportation systems as an alternative to conventional diesel vehicles. However, investigators will need to examine the circumstances surrounding the ignition and explosion to determine precisely how the collision affected the fuel system.

Police have not yet established the initial cause of the crash.

Investigators said it remains too early to determine whether excessive speed, driver impairment or distraction played any role in the collision.

All three possibilities remain under examination as officers continue gathering evidence and reconstructing the sequence of events.

The investigation is expected to involve a detailed review of vehicle movements, the points of impact and the circumstances that led to the second bus catching fire.

The tragedy has raised serious concerns about road safety and public transit operations in Calgary, particularly in busy residential communities where buses, commercial vehicles and passenger cars regularly share major routes.

Saddle Ridge is one of northeast Calgary’s established residential neighbourhoods, with transit services providing important transportation connections for residents travelling to work, school and other destinations.

The scale of Thursday’s collision and the resulting explosion have brought renewed attention to the potential consequences of major traffic incidents involving large public transportation vehicles.

For the families of the three people who lost their lives, the tragedy has left unanswered questions as authorities work to identify all the victims and determine what caused the initial collision.

The incident has also affected passengers, drivers and emergency responders who witnessed or experienced the rapidly developing emergency.

Calgary police are continuing their investigation and have not announced any conclusions regarding responsibility for the crash.

Further information is expected as investigators complete their examination of the vehicles and surrounding evidence.

For now, the focus remains on supporting those affected, establishing the full circumstances of the collision and determining how a chain reaction involving two transit buses and several vehicles resulted in three deaths, numerous injuries and a catastrophic explosion in northeast Calgary.
