Doctors in Sri Lanka have removed an enormous bladder stone weighing 3.1 kilograms from a 55 year old man in a rare medical case that could set a new world record.
The stone was removed during surgery at Trincomalee General Hospital in eastern Sri Lanka last week. Medical professionals involved in the procedure believe its size and weight could make it the largest bladder stone ever surgically removed and documented.
The extraordinary discovery was made while the patient was being treated at the hospital after suffering a stroke.
Doctors noticed that the man was experiencing significant difficulty urinating and carried out further examinations. Their investigations revealed the presence of stones inside his urinary bladder, leading to the decision to perform surgery.
During the operation, doctors discovered an unusually large stone. It weighed approximately 3.1 kilograms, equivalent to the weight of a full term newborn baby, and measured around 17 centimetres in length.
Its size was compared to an ostrich egg.
Dr Prahalahan Balakrishnan, who led the surgical team, said the available records suggest that the stone could be the largest bladder stone ever documented and removed through surgery.
The patient is reported to be in very good health following the procedure and remains at the hospital while continuing treatment for other medical conditions.
Doctors believe the enormous stone may have developed inside his bladder over a period of five to 10 years.
The case highlights how bladder stones can develop gradually when urinary problems are not identified or treated for an extended period.
Bladder stones are hard masses that form when minerals and other substances in urine crystallize inside the bladder. They are often associated with problems that prevent the bladder from completely emptying.
When urine remains in the bladder for long periods, it can become increasingly concentrated. Under those conditions, minerals can crystallize and gradually form solid deposits.
In many cases, small bladder stones can pass naturally through the urinary system. Very small stones may be no larger than grains of sand and can sometimes leave the body without medical treatment.
Larger stones, however, can interfere with the normal flow of urine and cause significant discomfort and complications.
Medical specialists generally consider stones measuring more than four centimetres to be giant bladder stones. The stone removed in Sri Lanka was substantially larger, measuring approximately 17 centimetres and weighing more than three kilograms.
The size of the stone makes the case particularly unusual.
According to Guinness World Records information cited in connection with the case, the previous record for the largest bladder stone removed from a patient involved a stone extracted in Brazil in 2003.
That stone weighed approximately 1.9 kilograms and measured 17.9 centimetres in length.
The Sri Lankan stone therefore appears to be significantly heavier, although its length is slightly shorter than the previously documented record.
If the Sri Lankan medical team’s findings are formally verified, the case could represent a new record for the heaviest bladder stone removed through surgery.
The unusual medical discovery also demonstrates how serious urinary problems can remain hidden for years.
Bladder stones can cause symptoms including difficulty urinating, frequent urination, pain during urination, interrupted urine flow and discomfort in the lower abdomen. Some patients may also experience blood in the urine or repeated urinary infections.
However, symptoms can vary depending on the size and location of the stone.
In this patient’s case, the urinary problem became particularly apparent while he was already receiving treatment for another serious medical condition.
The discovery allowed doctors to identify the extensive stone formation and remove it surgically.
The medical team has not indicated that the stone caused his stroke, and the two conditions should not be assumed to be directly connected. His continued hospital treatment is focused on his other medical problems as well as recovery following the operation.
The case has attracted attention because of the extraordinary physical dimensions of the stone.
At 3.1 kilograms, it weighed roughly as much as a newborn baby, while its approximately 17 centimetre length demonstrates how extensively a bladder stone can grow under unusual circumstances.
Doctors say the estimated five to 10 year development period may explain how the stone reached such an exceptional size.
The case also reinforces the importance of seeking medical attention when persistent urinary symptoms occur.
Difficulty passing urine should not simply be regarded as a normal consequence of ageing or ignored when it continues. Problems with bladder emptying can create conditions that allow stones to develop and grow.
Early diagnosis can allow doctors to identify smaller stones and determine whether medication, changes in treatment or a procedure is necessary.
Large bladder stones generally require medical intervention because they can obstruct urine flow and potentially damage the urinary system.
In extreme cases, untreated obstruction can contribute to infections and other serious complications.
For the Sri Lankan patient, the discovery came during treatment for another medical condition and resulted in the removal of a stone that had apparently remained in his bladder for years.
The successful surgery has left the patient in stable condition, according to the doctors involved.
The case is now likely to attract further medical and international attention as specialists assess the stone and compare its measurements with existing records.
If independently verified, the 3.1 kilogram stone could surpass the previous record by a considerable margin in terms of weight.
