ICC Set to Extend Funding for Afghanistan Women’s Refugee Cricket Team Through Long Term Support

The International Cricket Council is expected to extend financial support for Afghanistan’s women’s refugee cricket team, marking another important step in helping displaced players continue their careers while discussions over their international future remain ongoing.

The proposal was considered during the ICC’s annual conference, where members of the task force overseeing the initiative recommended that the financial assistance programme continue. The recommendation is expected to be formally presented to the ICC Board for final approval during its latest meeting.

The support programme was originally launched through a joint partnership involving the International Cricket Council, the England and Wales Cricket Board, Cricket Australia and the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The initiative was created to assist Afghanistan’s women cricketers after many were forced to leave their homeland following the political changes that occurred in 2021.

Since relocating to Australia, the players have continued training, participating in exhibition matches and promoting women’s cricket while rebuilding their lives in exile. The programme has provided financial assistance, coaching, training facilities and opportunities to continue developing their cricket careers despite their displacement.

Officials from the participating cricket boards have expressed strong support for extending the initiative, with discussions also focusing on increasing the ICC’s direct involvement through additional funding and administrative support. The long term objective is to provide greater stability for the players while broader decisions regarding their international status continue to be examined.

According to reports, the extension could provide support for several more years, with discussions considering funding arrangements that may continue until 2032. Such a commitment would offer long term security for the players and allow continued investment in their cricket development.

While financial support appears likely to continue, the question of whether the team will be granted official international status remains unresolved. The Afghanistan women’s players have repeatedly called on the ICC to recognise them as an official international team, allowing them to compete in sanctioned matches against other nations.

The players recently renewed those appeals during a tour of the United Kingdom, requesting greater clarity from the governing body regarding their future and the possibility of returning to official international competition.

The issue remains one of the most complex matters currently facing international cricket administrators. Any decision involves balancing support for displaced athletes while also considering the broader governance of cricket in Afghanistan and the responsibilities of the Afghanistan Cricket Board under existing political circumstances.

As part of ongoing discussions, the ICC Women’s Cricket Committee has prepared recommendations examining possible pathways for the refugee team to participate in official international cricket. Those proposals are expected to be reviewed by the ICC Board as discussions continue on the future of the programme.

Although no immediate decision is expected regarding official international recognition, the fact that the issue has now reached the highest level of ICC governance is viewed by many as an important milestone. It signals a willingness among cricket’s leadership to continue exploring long term solutions for the players.

In recent months, representatives of the Afghanistan women’s team also met with ICC Chairman Jay Shah and other senior cricket officials during major international events. Those discussions reportedly focused on the future of the programme, player welfare and opportunities for greater participation within international cricket.

The ICC has also taken steps to strengthen the governance of the support programme. A female representative has been added to the task force responsible for overseeing the initiative to ensure greater diversity in decision making and stronger representation of issues affecting women athletes.

In addition, the Australian based advocacy organisation Pitch Our Future will continue participating in future consultations to help ensure the voices and experiences of the displaced Afghan players remain central to decisions concerning the programme.

The continued commitment from the ICC and its member boards demonstrates growing recognition of the challenges faced by Afghanistan’s women cricketers and the importance of providing opportunities for them to continue pursuing the sport at the highest possible level.

While uncertainty remains regarding official international competition, the anticipated extension of funding offers reassurance that Afghanistan’s women cricketers will continue receiving the resources, training and support needed to preserve their careers as discussions over their future in world cricket continue.
