Saskatchewan minimum wage to increase, Alberta NDP promise to raise minimum wage if elected

Alberta’s Official Opposition New Democratic Party has unveiled a new labour policy package that promises higher wages for workers, stronger legal protection for employee tips, and the elimination of the lower minimum wage currently paid to workers under the age of 18 if the party forms the next provincial government.

Under the proposal, the Alberta NDP would increase the provincial minimum wage by one dollar per hour annually over a three year period, raising it from the current 15 dollars an hour to 18 dollars an hour. Once that target is reached, future increases would automatically be linked to inflation through the Consumer Price Index, ensuring wages continue to reflect the rising cost of living.

The party also committed to introducing legislation that would prohibit employers from withholding, deducting or redistributing tips earned by employees, a measure aimed at protecting workers in the hospitality and service industries.

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi announced the proposed changes ahead of the Calgary Stampede, highlighting the importance of supporting thousands of workers who help deliver one of the province’s largest annual events.

Nenshi said employees who contribute to making the Calgary Stampede a success deserve a government committed to protecting their earnings and ensuring they receive fair wages that help cover everyday expenses, including housing, groceries and other essential costs. He argued that Albertans deserve secure wages and full access to the tips they earn, adding that an NDP government would introduce stronger workplace protections after years of policies that he believes have weakened workers’ rights.

The New Democrats also pointed out that Alberta’s minimum wage has remained unchanged at 15 dollars an hour since 2018. According to the party, the province now has the lowest minimum wage in Canada, making an increase necessary to keep pace with inflation and the growing cost of living.

The announcement comes as neighbouring Saskatchewan confirmed its own scheduled minimum wage increase. The Saskatchewan government announced that the provincial minimum wage will rise to 15 dollars and 70 cents per hour on October 1 under its annual wage adjustment formula.

Saskatchewan’s minimum wage review combines changes in the Consumer Price Index with growth in the province’s average hourly wage to determine yearly increases.

Saskatchewan Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said the government continues to balance the need to improve wages for workers while ensuring employers remain competitive and capable of growing their businesses. He also emphasized that Saskatchewan’s relatively low personal income tax rates continue to make the province an attractive place to live, work and raise a family.

The Alberta NDP’s latest labour proposals are expected to become a key part of the party’s platform as it seeks to position itself as an advocate for working families and service sector employees ahead of the next provincial election. If implemented, the measures would represent the first increase to Alberta’s minimum wage in several years while introducing new legal safeguards designed to ensure workers retain every dollar in tips earned through their service.
