India Crowned FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup Champions After 2-0 Victory Over New Zealand

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — The Indian Women’s Hockey Team delivered a commanding performance to defeat hosts New Zealand 2-0 in the final of the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup 2025-26 on Sunday, securing the championship title and earning promotion to the prestigious FIH Hockey Women’s Pro League for next season.

India’s triumph marked their second Nations Cup title, having previously won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2022. The victory capped an unbeaten campaign in which the team showcased resilience, attacking flair and defensive discipline throughout the competition.

Navneet Kaur gave India the perfect start when she converted a penalty corner in the fourth minute with a powerful strike that left the New Zealand goalkeeper with no chance. The early goal settled the Indian side and provided the momentum they needed against a determined home team backed by a passionate crowd in Auckland.

India continued to apply pressure and doubled their advantage in the 15th minute. Sunelita Toppo found the back of the net after expertly deflecting Deepika’s effort from a penalty corner, putting India firmly in control of the final.

The Indian side impressed with its speed in transition and relentless intensity, creating difficulties for the New Zealand defence throughout the opening stages of the match. Their aggressive approach and ability to capitalize on set-piece opportunities proved decisive.

As the match progressed, New Zealand attempted to fight back and enjoyed periods of possession, particularly during the second quarter. However, India remained composed and organized, denying the hosts any clear scoring opportunities while also threatening to extend their lead on the counterattack.

The third quarter highlighted India’s defensive strength. Led by an experienced backline and excellent midfield support, the team frustrated New Zealand’s attacking efforts and maintained its two-goal cushion. The hosts struggled to penetrate India’s disciplined defensive structure, which remained compact and effective under pressure.

India continued to defend resolutely in the final quarter. New Zealand earned a penalty corner early in the period and saw it as a potential route back into the contest, but veteran goalkeeper Savita produced a crucial save to preserve her team’s advantage.

From that point forward, India managed the game with maturity and confidence, closing down spaces and preventing New Zealand from generating meaningful chances. The final whistle confirmed a memorable 2-0 victory and sparked celebrations among players, coaching staff and supporters.

Lalremsiami was named Player of the Match for her outstanding contribution in the final, while striker Deepika finished as the tournament’s joint-leading scorer with six goals, sharing the honour with United States forward Ashley Sessa.

India’s road to the title was impressive. The team opened the tournament with a 3-2 victory over the United States before defeating Japan 2-1 and Uruguay 3-2 in Pool A. They then produced one of the most dominant performances of the competition in the semi-final, crushing Chile 6-0 to book their place in the championship match.

The title victory not only underlines India’s growing stature in international women’s hockey but also secures their return to the FIH Hockey Women’s Pro League, where they will compete against the world’s elite teams next season.

Recognizing the achievement, Hockey India announced a cash reward of INR 3 lakh for each player and INR 1.5 lakh for every member of the support staff.

The Nations Cup triumph represents another significant milestone for Indian women’s hockey, reflecting the progress the team has made on the international stage. With a blend of experienced leaders and emerging young talent, India’s latest success signals a bright future as they prepare to test themselves against the best teams in world hockey once again in the Pro League.
