Getting where you need to go in Calgary should feel safe, smooth and predictable. Improvements across the city are helping make that happen.
From quicker commutes to safer crossings near schools and parks, City transportation projects underway this year focus on making everyday trips easier, whether you’re driving to work, walking your kids to school, biking to a park or catching transit across town.
More than one in three Calgarians identified traffic and roads as a top priority in The City’s Spring Research survey. These projects respond directly, helping people spend less time in traffic and more time where it matters most.
“People just want to get where they’re going safely and without added stress,” says Nik Danilov, Leader, Infrastructure Services department. “These improvements are focused on the areas we hear about most – busy routes, challenging merges and crossings – so daily trips are easier and more predictable overtime.”
Together, these projects represent a significant investment in Calgary’s transportation network. While work is underway this year, the long-term result will be a system that works better for the people who rely on it every day.
Key projects improving how Calgarians move
Memorial Drive Extension
Helping Calgarians travel across the city more easily, while improving access to growing east Calgary communities.
Calgarians will have a faster, more direct route across the city, making it easier to reach growing communities and key destinations in east Calgary.
The Memorial Drive extension will reduce travel time, improve traffic flow and strengthen east-west connections by:
· Extending Memorial Drive east over Stoney Trail to create a continuous route.
· Connecting the roadway from Abbeydale and Applewood Park to 84 Street E.
· Building two noise barriers to help reduce traffic noise for nearby residents.
This project will help connect new and growing communities like Belvedere, and improve access to key destinations in east Calgary.
Country Hills Widening
Faster, safer travel for people moving through northeast Calgary.
Drivers will spend less time in traffic and have a safer, more reliable trip along Country Hills Boulevard.
This project removes a long-standing bottleneck, improves traffic flow, reduces congestion and makes daily trips smoother by:
· Widening Country Hills Boulevard from two lanes to six between Barlow Trail and 36 St. N.E.
· Adding a sidewalk on the north side and a regional pathway on the south side to improve pedestrian access and connections to nearby businesses.
· Installing 700 m of water feeder main, to support future growth and avoid additional construction later.
Construction started in May 2025 and is expected to finish later this year. This work will keep people moving, improve safety, and support growing communities in northeast Calgary.
50 Avenue S.W. Improvements
Making a busy street safer to help Calgarians get where they are going.
Getting to schools, parks and everyday destinations along 50 Avenue S.W. will feel easier and more comfortable for everyone.
Upgrades includes:
· Building a 630 metre multi-use pathway along the south side, connecting Sandy Beach to Mount Royal University.
· Adding a new traffic signal and curb extensions to shorten crossing distances and improving visibility for people walking.
· Replacing 1.5 kilometres of aging pavement between Crowchild Trail and 14A Steet S.W. to create a smoother drive.
50 Avenue S.W. is key route for communities like Altadore, Garrison Woods and North Glenmore Park. These upgrades will improve safety, strengthen connections, and make it easier for everyone to move through the area.
Bridgeland Riverside Multimodal Pedestrian Bridge
Helping Calgarians connect to communities, pathways and transit across the Bow River
A safer, more direct route is coming for people walking, wheeling and cycling between Bridgeland, St. Patrick’s Island, nearby pathways and the LRT station.
This year, we are starting construction on a new pedestrian bridge from the north bank over the Bow River to St. Patrick’s Island. We will also replace the aging bridge over Memorial Drive in a future phase.
By separating people from traffic and closing key gaps in the pathway network, these crossings will improve safety and create a smoother, more accessible trip across the river. It will be easier to move between neighbourhoods, parks and transit without a car.
5 Ave S.E. Merge Lane Extension
Smoother, safer merges onto Memorial Drive
Drivers will experience less stress and better traffic flow when merging onto Memorial Drive N.E., especially during busy peak times.
This summer, we are extending the 5 Ave S.E. flyover ramp by about 400 metres, giving drivers more space and time to merge safely.
Once complete, this upgrade will reduce delays, ease congestion and make daily driving more predictable for Calgarians traveling through the area.
