India March into FIH Women’s Nations Cup Semi-Finals After Thrilling 2-1 Win Over Japan

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — The Indian Women’s Hockey Team booked their place in the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup 2026 after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Japan in their second Pool A match at the North Harbour National Hockey Centre on Tuesday.

Led by an inspiring performance from captain Salima Tete, who was named Player of the Match, India produced another determined display to register their second consecutive victory of the tournament and move to the top of the group standings.

Salima Tete opened the scoring in the 33rd minute before Lalremsiami netted the decisive goal in the final quarter. Japan’s lone goal came through Hiramitsu Ai, who briefly restored parity midway through the third period.

The victory was made even more special as Indian midfielder Jyoti celebrated her 100th senior international appearance, marking a significant milestone in her career with an important team triumph.

The opening half proved to be a closely contested affair, with both teams displaying disciplined defensive structures and limiting clear scoring opportunities. India and Japan exchanged attacks throughout the first two quarters, but neither side was able to break the deadlock before halftime.

India finally found the breakthrough shortly after the restart. In the 33rd minute, a cleverly designed penalty-corner routine caught the Japanese defence off guard. Navneet Kaur’s initial strike was expertly redirected by Nikki Pradhan into the path of Salima Tete, who calmly guided the ball into the net to hand India a deserved 1-0 lead.

Japan responded quickly and demonstrated why they remain one of Asia’s strongest hockey nations. Just two minutes later, Hiramitsu Ai converted a penalty corner opportunity, beating the Indian defence to level the score at 1-1 and set up an intense final quarter.

With the match finely balanced, India continued to press forward in search of a winner. Their persistence paid off in the 49th minute when veteran midfielder Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam delivered a precise pass from the edge of the circle. Lalremsiami reacted brilliantly, deflecting the ball into the goal and restoring India’s advantage.

The Indian defence then produced a composed performance during the closing stages, successfully containing Japan’s attacking efforts and preserving the lead until the final whistle.

The result gives India six points from two matches after earlier defeating the United States in their opening fixture. The unbeaten run guarantees India a place in the tournament’s semi-finals and strengthens their position as one of the leading contenders for the title.

The victory also reflects the growing confidence and consistency of the Indian women’s hockey programme, which continues to build momentum on the international stage under the leadership of captain Salima Tete.

Japan, meanwhile, will now battle the United States for the remaining semi-final position from Pool A. Both teams still have an opportunity to progress, making their upcoming encounter crucial for qualification.

India will conclude their Pool A campaign against Uruguay on June 18. While qualification has already been secured, the match offers an opportunity for the Indian side to maintain their winning momentum and finish the group stage unbeaten.

With two impressive victories and a place in the last four already confirmed, India have sent a strong message to the rest of the competition that they are serious contenders for the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup 2026 crown.
