The city of Tucson is preparing to host Iran national football team as its official base camp for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, even as geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel continue to dominate international headlines.

Officials at Kino Sports Complex say preparations are moving forward at full pace to ensure Iran’s players and staff are welcomed in a secure and professional environment ahead of the world’s biggest football tournament, which begins next month across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Sarah Hanna, director of the Kino Sports Complex, said local organizers are focused entirely on providing the Iranian squad with a positive experience. Grounds crews are carefully maintaining the training pitch to meet FIFA standards, while hotel accommodations, meeting rooms, catering and security arrangements have already been finalized.

According to Hanna, preparations involve regular coordination meetings with FIFA officials, facility managers and service providers to ensure every detail is in place before the arrival of Team Melli.

Iran’s football federation has confirmed the team intends to participate in the World Cup, although officials have sought assurances regarding visa issuance and the treatment of players and support staff while in the United States.

The Iranian squad is expected to arrive in Tucson approximately two weeks before its opening Group G match against New Zealand national football team on June 15 in Los Angeles. Iran will then face Belgium on June 21 before concluding the group stage against Egypt on June 27 in Seattle.

At the Kino Sports Complex, players will have access to weight-training facilities, recovery rooms, ice baths and massage services designed to support elite athletic performance during the tournament.

Jon Pearlman, president of FC Tucson, said the city views the tournament as an opportunity to demonstrate how sport can unite people from different nations and cultures.

“We welcome them with open arms,” Pearlman said, emphasizing that football has the power to bring communities together rather than divide them.

Members of Tucson’s Iranian-American community have also expressed hope that the team will feel comfortable and supported throughout its stay. Amir Pajouyan, a local resident originally from Iran, said the team’s presence is a source of pride and a reminder that sport can transcend political conflict.

Tucson, a diverse city of more than half a million residents, is known for its strong sporting culture and warm hospitality. Community members say they are eager to cheer for the Iranian team and to show that athletes can compete in an atmosphere of mutual respect regardless of tensions between governments.

FIFA has maintained that Iran remains fully scheduled to participate in the tournament, and organizers in Arizona continue to work under the assumption that the team’s visit will proceed as planned.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest in the tournament’s history, featuring 48 national teams and matches hosted across three countries. For Tucson, serving as the home base for Team Melli is a significant international honor and an opportunity to showcase the city’s world-class facilities.

As the countdown to kickoff continues, Tucson’s message to Iran’s players is clear: they will be welcomed safely, professionally and with the spirit of sportsmanship that defines the world’s most popular game.
