Alberta Pledges $384M to Build NAIT Advanced Skills Centre in Edmonton

The Alberta government has announced a major $384 million investment over three years to support the expansion of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) through its planned Advanced Skills Centre in Edmonton.

The project, valued at $560 million overall, is designed to strengthen hands-on training in skilled trades and prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce. The facility is expected to open in fall 2030 and will significantly expand NAIT’s capacity for technical education.

The Advanced Skills Centre will consolidate 29 programs into job-site-style learning environments, allowing students to train in realistic settings that mirror real-world workplaces. Officials say the centre will support an additional 5,500 apprentices each year in sectors such as energy, construction, and manufacturing.

Danielle Smith described skilled trades as essential to the province’s long-term economic growth, stating that Alberta’s expanding economy will require a steady pipeline of trained workers to sustain development.

NAIT leadership also welcomed the announcement, calling it a historic investment in workforce development. The institution’s president and CEO emphasized that the project will help ensure more students graduate job-ready and capable of meeting industry demands.

The new centre is expected to add approximately 625,000 square feet to NAIT’s main campus. Early site preparation is planned to begin this spring, with full construction expected to start next year.

Once completed, the Advanced Skills Centre is projected to become one of Western Canada’s largest dedicated training hubs for skilled trades education, supporting both students and industry partners across Alberta’s key economic sectors.
