The opening ceremony of the Westwinds Cricket Nets brought together community leaders, cricket enthusiasts, and supporters to celebrate a major milestone for the growth of cricket in Calgary. The event was attended by MLA Irfan Sabir, Councillor Raj Dhaliwal, and members of the Calgary & District Cricket League, who praised the project as an important investment in youth, sports, and community development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Irfan Sabir said the new cricket nets represent more than just a sports facility, describing the project as a symbol of unity and inclusion in one of Canada’s most multicultural cities. He noted that cricket continues to connect communities from different backgrounds and provides young people with positive opportunities to stay active and engaged. Sabir congratulated the Calgary & District Cricket League for its commitment to expanding the sport and for working tirelessly to make the project a reality.

Councillor Raj Dhaliwal also highlighted the importance of supporting community-based sports initiatives and acknowledged the efforts of league executives, volunteers, and supporters who contributed to the development of the Westwinds Cricket Nets. He said cricket has become one of the fastest-growing sports in Calgary and stressed that facilities like these are essential to meeting the needs of players and families across the city.

Founded decades ago, the Calgary & District Cricket League has played a leading role in promoting cricket throughout Calgary and Alberta. The league organizes competitive tournaments, youth programs, and community events while bringing together players from diverse cultural backgrounds. League officials said the new practice nets will help athletes improve their skills and encourage greater participation among young players interested in the sport.

Community members attending the ceremony described the project as a long-awaited addition to Calgary’s sports infrastructure. The opening concluded with celebrations among players, supporters, and families who gathered to mark another important step in the continued growth of cricket in the city.
