Canadians across most provinces and territories will receive a test alert today as part of the country’s national emergency notification system.

The Alert Ready test will send a loud warning tone and message through:

  • Television broadcasts
  • Radio stations
  • Compatible smartphones and wireless devices

Where and When the Test Will Happen

The test alert will be issued at scheduled times throughout the day, generally between morning and early afternoon.

  • Most provinces and territories will participate
  • Quebec and Saskatchewan are not included in today’s test
  • Ontario will conduct its test separately on Thursday

Officials say staggered testing helps avoid system overload and ensures regional coordination.

Purpose of the Test

The Alert Ready system is tested twice a year, typically in May and November, to:

  • Ensure the system functions properly
  • Increase public awareness of emergency alerts
  • Prepare residents for real emergency situations

Authorities emphasize that there is no option to opt out of these alerts, whether they are tests or real emergencies.

How the System Is Used

The Alert Ready system is used to warn Canadians about urgent and life-threatening situations, including:

  • Amber Alerts
  • Severe weather events such as tornadoes
  • Public safety threats

As of April 30, the system had already issued 28 alerts in 2026, highlighting its ongoing role in national emergency response.

What Residents Should Expect

During the test:

  • Devices will emit a loud alarm tone
  • A message will clearly state that it is only a test
  • No action is required from the public

Officials advise residents not to be alarmed but to treat the alert as a reminder of how the system works.
