A Calgary-based community organization is preparing to host a commemorative gathering to honor the life, philosophy, and enduring influence of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, widely regarded as one of the most important intellectual figures of the Muslim world and a key thinker behind the idea of a separate homeland for Muslims in South Asia. The program, titled Remembering Iqbal, is being organized by the Pakistan Maple Alliance to mark his death anniversary and to revisit his ideas in a modern context.

The event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 10 at 6:00 pm at Al-Amal Academy, located at 9 Royal Vista Drive NW in Calgary. Members of the community are expected to attend in large numbers, reflecting the continued relevance of Iqbal’s thought among diaspora communities.

The program will focus on two major themes, Iqbal and Western Civilization, and the relevance of his philosophy in the modern era. Through these themes, speakers will explore how Iqbal critically engaged with Western ideas while advocating for intellectual independence, spiritual revival, and self realization. His concept of Khudi, often translated as selfhood, remains central to discussions about identity, empowerment, and moral responsibility in contemporary society.

Born in 1877 in Sialkot, Iqbal was not only a poet but also a philosopher and political thinker whose work combined classical Islamic thought with modern philosophical ideas. He studied in Europe, including at Cambridge and Munich, where he developed a deeper understanding of Western philosophy. His poetry in Urdu and Persian continues to inspire millions, addressing themes of faith, unity, and the awakening of the individual and the collective. His vision played a significant role in shaping the intellectual foundations that later contributed to the creation of Pakistan.

The Calgary event will include panel discussions featuring community speakers who will analyze Iqbal’s contributions and their application in today’s globalized world. A documentary film on his life and achievements will also be screened, offering attendees a deeper look into his intellectual journey and legacy. In addition, a musical performance inspired by his poetry is planned, bringing an artistic interpretation of his message to the audience. Refreshments will be served, allowing participants to engage in informal discussions and networking.

The event is being coordinated by Jamshaid Qureshi, Tahir Alvi, Asif Anwar, and Syed Imtiaz Hussain, who have worked to bring together a program that blends education, culture, and community engagement. Their efforts highlight the importance of preserving heritage while encouraging dialogue among younger generations.

The program is supported by Jush Law Barrister and Solicitor, led by Shazia Niaz, Barrister, Solicitor, and Notary Public. Organizers have also invited additional sponsors and community partners to support the initiative, emphasizing collaboration in promoting cultural awareness.

Through this event, Pakistan Maple Alliance aims to create a space where the ideas of Allama Iqbal can be revisited and appreciated in a contemporary setting. By connecting his philosophy with present day challenges, the gathering seeks to inspire thoughtful reflection and a deeper understanding of his timeless message.
