The City of Calgary has completed its annual food truck safety blitz, inspecting mobile food vendors ahead of the busy 2026 festival and event season.
The initiative, led by the city’s Business Safety team, aims to ensure that food truck operators meet all safety and regulatory requirements before peak months when demand for mobile food services rises significantly.
A total of 144 food trucks underwent inspections during this year’s campaign. The effort brought together multiple agencies, including Alberta Health Services, the Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Safety Codes, and regional partners such as the Airdrie and High River fire departments. City teams from Business Safety, Business Registry, and Trade Inspections also participated.
Michael Briegel, Deputy Chief of Business Safety, said the focus of the blitz is on helping businesses succeed rather than issuing penalties. By coordinating inspections across departments, the city enables operators to address issues early and begin the season fully compliant and confident.
Key Safety Checks Conducted
Inspectors evaluated several critical areas to ensure both public and operator safety:
- Fire suppression systems, extinguishers, and kitchen hood cleanliness
- Food handling practices, sanitation, and temperature control
- Safe propane, gas, and electrical connections
- Wastewater storage and disposal systems
- Valid business licences, insurance, and regulatory approvals
Operators were also required to request inspections in advance and have all necessary documentation, permits, and previous inspection reports available onsite.
Supporting Local Businesses
The annual blitz reflects Calgary’s broader effort to balance public safety with business support. By offering on-the-spot education and guidance, officials aim to reduce compliance issues and improve operational standards across the mobile food industry.
Food truck operators who missed the scheduled blitz are required to complete individual inspections through standard city channels before they can legally operate.
As Calgary prepares for a busy summer of events and festivals, the initiative ensures that both residents and visitors can enjoy safe and high-quality food experiences across the city.
