Iran has executed a man accused of spying for Israel’s intelligence agency, escalating tensions amid ongoing unrest and a series of recent executions linked to national security cases.
The country’s judiciary confirmed that Erfan Kiani was hanged after being convicted of working on behalf of Israel’s intelligence service during protests in the central province of Isfahan.
Allegations of Espionage and Unrest
According to Iran’s judiciary, Kiani was accused of carrying out activities on behalf of the Mossad during unrest that erupted in January. Authorities described him as one of the main operatives involved in what they called sabotage activities, including arson, possession of weapons, and attacks on security forces.
The judiciary’s media outlet said the case was reviewed by the Supreme Court before the execution was carried out.
Part of Wider Crackdown
The execution comes amid a broader wave of capital punishment cases in Iran linked to protests and alleged foreign interference. Iranian authorities have claimed that recent unrest was fueled by external actors, including Israel and the United States, as well as opposition groups.
In recent weeks, multiple individuals have been executed over similar allegations involving national security and protest-related violence.
Rising Regional Tensions
The case unfolds against a backdrop of heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, as well as broader instability in the region. Officials in Tehran have repeatedly accused foreign intelligence services of attempting to destabilize the country during periods of internal unrest.
Human rights organizations have raised concerns about the increasing use of the death penalty in protest-related cases, while Iranian authorities maintain that such measures are necessary for national security.
Ongoing Situation
Iran has not indicated any slowdown in prosecutions tied to recent unrest, and officials say investigations into alleged foreign-backed operations are continuing.
The execution of Kiani adds to a growing list of cases that reflect deepening political and security tensions in the region, with further developments expected as investigations proceed.
