Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has passed away at the age of 92, marking the end of an extraordinary era in Indian music. She died on April 12, 2026, in Mumbai, where she had been receiving treatment at Breach Candy Hospital for extreme exhaustion and a chest infection.

With a career spanning more than seven decades, Bhosle recorded over 12,000 songs in multiple Indian languages, becoming one of the most versatile and celebrated voices in Bollywood history. Her music defined generations, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s, when her voice became synonymous with iconic film soundtracks.

Born in 1933 into a musical family, she began singing at a young age alongside her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar. Despite early struggles, Bhosle carved out her own identity, exploring a wide range of genres from classical and folk to pop and modern fusion.

Her immense contribution to Indian music earned her numerous honours, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award and multiple international recognitions, including Grammy nominations. She also continued to collaborate with global artists later in life, reflecting her timeless appeal.

Tributes poured in from across the world following her passing. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, while President Droupadi Murmu described her death as an irreparable loss to music lovers.

Renowned composer A. R. Rahman remembered her as an eternal voice in music, while singer Shankar Mahadevan called it a heartbreaking day for the industry. Actress Hema Malini also paid tribute, recalling her emotional connection with the singer whose voice brought many of her film songs to life.

Beyond music, Bhosle was also known for her entrepreneurial ventures, including launching the “Asha’s” restaurant chain internationally.

Her passing leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations, with her voice remaining timeless in the history of global music.
