Former Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34 after serious cardiac health concerns forced him to end his playing career earlier than expected.
The former Brazil international, who most recently played for São Paulo FC, had been away from competition since late last year after suffering a medical episode during a routine club examination. According to club officials, he fainted during testing and was immediately taken for medical observation, where he remained under hospital care for five days.
Doctors later identified the condition as vasovagal syncope, a medical event involving a sudden drop in blood pressure, reduced heart rate, and decreased blood flow to the brain. Although such episodes can vary in severity, specialists advised against continuing high level competitive football because of the risks attached to intense physical strain.
The medical advice ultimately led Oscar to make the difficult decision to close his professional career despite still having a contract that extended into 2027.
In his farewell message, Oscar said his football journey had taken him across the world and that ending his career in São Paulo carried emotional meaning because it was the same club where his professional story first began.
Oscar first rose to international attention in Brazilian football before earning a major move to Chelsea FC, where he became one of the most technically gifted midfielders in the squad during an important period for the London club.
During five seasons in England, he won two Premier League titles and helped Chelsea secure the Europa League. His intelligent movement, creative passing, and ability to score important goals quickly made him a trusted figure in midfield.
At Chelsea, Oscar played alongside some of the biggest names in world football and contributed during one of the club’s strongest domestic eras. His performances in England established him as a regular member of the Brazilian national team.
In 2017, he made a high profile move to Shanghai Port FC, joining the growing wave of elite players moving to Chinese football during that period. In China, he enjoyed another successful chapter, winning three league titles and becoming one of the league’s most influential foreign players.
His long stay in Asia also showed his consistency, as he remained a leading creative force season after season.
In 2025, Oscar returned to São Paulo FC, reconnecting with his roots and bringing international experience back to Brazilian domestic football. Supporters welcomed his return as a major emotional and sporting moment.
Internationally, Oscar represented Brazil 48 times and was considered one of the country’s most elegant attacking midfielders of his generation.
He played an important role in Brazil’s victory in the Confederations Cup and also appeared in the 2014 FIFA World Cup held on home soil, where he scored memorable goals and remained part of Brazil’s central attacking structure.
One of his most remembered international moments came during the opening phase of the 2014 tournament when he delivered strong performances under intense national expectation.
His retirement due to health reasons reminds the football world that medical safety remains above competition, regardless of talent, contracts, or achievements.
Although his career ends earlier than many expected, Oscar leaves behind an international football legacy built across Brazil, England, China, and the global stage.
For many supporters, he will be remembered as a midfielder whose technical calm, intelligence, and quiet effectiveness often spoke louder than headlines.
