Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is introducing new passport fees across Canada while also bringing in a new service guarantee that promises refunds if processing takes longer than thirty business days.

The new fee schedule begins on April 1, 2026 and marks the first general passport fee adjustment in more than a decade.

Federal officials say the increase is intended to reflect inflation and rising production costs linked to secure travel documents and service delivery.

For adults applying inside Canada, a ten year regular passport will now cost 163 dollars and 50 cents, up from 160 dollars.

A five year adult passport will rise to 122 dollars and 50 cents, while children’s five year passports will increase to 58 dollars and 50 cents.

Officials say the increases are modest for standard applications but more noticeable for special services such as urgent pickup and weekend processing.

Some premium service options are expected to rise by amounts ranging from around fifteen dollars to nearly fifty dollars depending on urgency and location.

Passport applications submitted outside Canada will also face slightly higher charges under the updated fee structure.

Authorities have warned applicants using mail service that the date the application arrives, not the mailing date, determines which fee applies.

This means applications posted before April 1 may still be charged under the new rates if they arrive after the change takes effect.

The department also confirmed that passport fees will now be reviewed every year to keep pace with inflation and maintain long term service stability.

A major change being introduced alongside the fee increase is a formal processing guarantee.

Beginning April 2, standard passport applications must be completed within thirty business days.

If processing takes longer than that timeline, applicants will automatically receive a refund of the passport fee without needing to file a separate request.

Officials say the refund system will apply automatically, reducing extra administrative steps for travellers waiting for documents.

The policy is intended to improve confidence in federal passport services after previous periods when long delays affected travel planning across Canada.

The government says secure travel document demand remains high, and the updated fee model is designed to support consistent production standards while protecting service reliability for future applicants.
