The Government of Alberta has approved a new vehicle licence plate design following consultations with residents across the province. The decision marks a significant change to one of Alberta’s most recognizable symbols, with the updated plate expected to be officially unveiled by mid to late 2026.

While officials have not yet confirmed who will formally announce the design, preparations for the rollout are already underway. The new licence plate will feature imagery inspired by Moraine Lake, reflecting Alberta’s natural landscape and scenic identity.

The redesign replaces the long-standing “Wild Rose Country” slogan, which has been associated with Alberta licence plates for decades. The change comes after public input gathered through provincial engagement platforms, where residents were invited to share their preferences on a new look and identity for the plates.

Implementation Timeline

The new licence plates are expected to be introduced in phases beginning in late 2026, with full implementation likely extending into early 2027. Initially, the updated plates will be issued to newly registered vehicles. Existing vehicle owners will be allowed to continue using their current plates until replacement is required or optional exchanges are made available.

Background and History

Alberta’s licence plates have evolved over time from simple numeric identifiers to more distinctive designs representing the province. Early plates focused primarily on functionality, while later versions incorporated slogans and symbols to reflect Alberta’s identity.

The “Wild Rose Country” slogan became a defining feature of Alberta plates, symbolizing the province’s official flower and regional pride. In recent decades, the design has remained largely consistent, making it one of the most recognizable licence plates in Canada.

The newly approved design represents a shift toward a more modern and visually distinctive identity, combining public input with iconic provincial imagery. Officials say further details about distribution and availability will be announced in the coming months.
