Viliame Naupoto said the current passport platform is receiving its first major upgrade since being introduced several years ago.
Officials described the work as overdue but necessary to improve service standards.
Online Passport Enrolment to Be Introduced
Under the new system, applicants will be able to begin passport enrolment online.
The planned process will allow citizens to:
- submit application details remotely
- complete enrolment before visiting an office
- reduce in-person waiting time
This change is expected to improve convenience significantly.
First-Time Applicants Still Need Biometric Visit
Authorities say first-time applicants will still need to attend an immigration office for biometric capture.
Appointments will be required only for this stage.
Passport Renewals to Become Easier
For passport renewals, the new system is expected to reduce office visits.
Applicants renewing passports may only need to visit immigration offices for final collection.
Government Targets Completion by May
Officials say the upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of May 2026.
