In response to a world that is becoming increasingly dangerous and divided, regions once considered outside the scope of global tensions are now witnessing rising competition. The Arctic, in particular, is at the centre of this shift. In light of this growing global uncertainty, Canada’s government is reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty in the North, while enhancing security cooperation with its international Allies.

To bolster these efforts, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced an upcoming visit to Norway and the United Kingdom from March 13 to 15, 2026. This visit will focus on strengthening defence and security ties, as well as advancing economic partnerships in critical sectors such as clean energy and artificial intelligence.

Visit to Norway
Prime Minister Carney will begin his trip in Bardufoss, Norway, where he will observe the Norwegian-led NATO Exercise Cold Response. This important exercise will involve military personnel from 14 Allied nations coming together above the Arctic Circle. The exercise is designed to enhance the readiness, interoperability, and defensive capabilities of NATO forces in the North. Notably, Sweden and Finland will also participate in this crucial training, underscoring NATO’s shared commitment to defending the Alliance’s northern borders.

Following the exercise, the Prime Minister will travel to Oslo, where he is set to meet with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Their discussions will focus on advancing the Canada-Norway relationship in sectors such as trade, investment, clean energy, critical minerals, and aerospace.

Carney’s visit to Norway will also include participation in the Canada-Nordic Summit, where he will engage with other Nordic leaders to enhance geopolitical coordination and bolster transatlantic security efforts.

Visit to the United Kingdom
After his visit to Norway, Prime Minister Carney will head to London for discussions with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Their talks will focus on collective defence, the global economic landscape, and ongoing international challenges, including the situation in the Middle East.

Throughout his visit, the Prime Minister will also meet with key business leaders from various sectors. The goal is to position Canada as an ideal destination for global investment, particularly in defence technologies, critical minerals, and the rapidly growing artificial intelligence industry.

This trip signifies Canada’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its international relationships and securing its interests in the ever-evolving global security landscape.
