A teenager has been arrested and charged following an armed robbery at a retail store in northeast Calgary where dozens of mobile phones were stolen at gunpoint.

The incident triggered a rapid police response, including aerial surveillance, which led to the suspect’s arrest only hours after the robbery.

Armed Robbery at Northeast Retailer

The robbery occurred on the morning of Sunday, March 1, 2026, at approximately 11 a.m. at a store located in the 5000 block of Falshire Drive Northeast area near Falshire Gate Northeast.

Investigators believe a man entered the store, pointed what appeared to be a handgun at employees, and demanded cell phones. After gaining access to a store safe, the suspect took multiple devices before fleeing the location.

Store employees immediately contacted police following the robbery.

Police Response and Arrest

Officers from the Calgary Police Service quickly launched a search for the suspect, deploying the helicopter unit known as HAWCS to assist in tracking the individual.

The suspect was later located outside a residence in the 0–100 block of Martinvalley Place Northeast. Officers observed the individual moving between the home and its garage.

Members from District 5 along with the police Canine Unit moved in and arrested the suspect as he exited the residence.

Evidence Recovered

Following the arrest, officers conducted a search of the home where they recovered 22 stolen cellular phones with an estimated value of approximately $22,000. Investigators also seized a pellet handgun and clothing believed to match what the suspect was wearing during the robbery.

Authorities stated that the recovered evidence is part of the ongoing investigation.

Police have charged Tamrat Mesfin Beyene, 18, of Calgary with multiple offences, including:

  • Robbery with a firearm
  • Two counts of forcible confinement
  • Disguise with intent
  • Mischief over $5,000
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Two counts of breaching probation

Investigators say the quick coordination between officers on the ground and aerial support helped bring the situation under control safely.

Police officials say the case highlights the importance of coordinated policing resources in responding quickly to violent crimes in the city.
