The Northwest Territories Community Planning Framework has been recognized as a finalist for the 2026 Canadian Awards for Planning Excellence. Launched in September 2025, the framework provides community governments with planning tools to engage residents, strengthen local capacity, and achieve development goals while integrating considerations across economic development, climate change, housing, healthy communities, and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.
Canadian Awards for Planning Excellence
The Canadian Awards for Planning Excellence are presented by the Canadian Institute of Planners, a members-based organization of professional planners working in areas such as land use planning, environmental resource management, land development, heritage conservation, social planning, transportation planning, and economic development.
These awards celebrate projects that demonstrate innovative planning practices, positively impact the profession and public interest, have strong implementation potential, and stand out for quality of content and presentation.
Finalists for 2026, including the NWT Community Planning Framework, can be explored on the official Canadian Awards for Planning Excellence 2026 Finalists page. Winners will be announced in July at the joint Canadian Institute of Planners and l’Ordre des urbanistes du Québec 2026 National Planning Conference.
Supporting Sustainable Community Planning
Vince McKay, Vince McKay, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, emphasized the government’s commitment to sustainable land use planning:
“The GNWT is committed to supporting community governments to develop sustainable land use plans that meet the needs of residents and strategically address the challenges of a changing climate. I value the contributions from professional planners and I am proud of the work of GNWT staff and our partnership with the NWT Association of Communities and community governments to develop resources to support community governments with land use planning.”
The framework reflects the Northwest Territories’ focus on equipping communities with the resources and guidance needed to implement effective planning strategies that promote resilience, inclusivity, and long-term sustainability.
