The Government of Saskatchewan has officially designated February as Therapeutic Recreation Awareness Month, recognizing the contributions of therapeutic recreation professionals across the province.

These professionals provide essential support in health care, wellness, and sport, helping residents improve physical strength, mobility, emotional wellbeing, and overall quality of life. Therapeutic recreation plays a key role in rehabilitation centres, long-term care facilities, and other health care settings, promoting self-esteem, cognitive stimulation, social interaction, pain management, and relaxation.

“I want to thank therapeutic recreation professionals for the work they do in a variety of health care settings across Saskatchewan,” said Lori Carr. “Therapeutic recreation professionals play a vital role in helping residents increase their physical strength and mobility, emotional wellbeing, and achieve a higher quality of life.”

Melanie Baumann, Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Association of Recreation Professionals (SARP), emphasized the importance of celebrating these professionals this month. “Recreation Therapy professionals are integral in contributing to the health and wellbeing of residents in Saskatchewan, particularly those experiencing mental health and addictions challenges, individuals with complex medical needs, and residents living in long-term care. Recreation Therapy professionals contribute to healthier, more inclusive communities, and SARP is proud to support and advocate for this essential field.”

Therapeutic recreation uses structured leisure and recreation activities to help residents live happier, healthier, and more independent lives. The Saskatchewan Association of Recreation Professionals represents professionals working in therapeutic recreation, as well as other sectors including recreation, tourism, sport, and culture across the province.

February’s awareness month serves as an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the vital work of these professionals in improving the lives of Saskatchewan residents.
