Katherine Hartley Short, the adopted daughter of actor Martin Short, has died at 42.
A representative for the family confirmed her passing in a statement, expressing profound grief and asking for privacy during this difficult time. The statement described Katherine as deeply loved and remembered for the light and joy she brought into the lives of those around her.
Katherine was one of three children adopted by Martin Short and his late wife, actress Nancy Dolman. She is survived by her two younger brothers, Henry and Oliver.
According to reports, authorities responded to her home in the Hollywood Hills on Monday night. Police sources indicated that her death is being investigated as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A Career Dedicated to Mental Health
Katherine Short built a career focused on helping others. She worked as a social worker and therapist, specializing in the treatment of anxiety, depression and suicidality. She spent four years at UCLA’s Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital before continuing her work in outpatient care at the Camden Center.
She was also involved in advocacy efforts to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, working with the organization Bring Change 2 Mind to promote awareness and support for those struggling with mental health challenges.
Family Legacy
Martin Short and Nancy Dolman met in 1972 during a production of Godspell and married in 1980. Dolman died in 2010 after battling ovarian cancer. In past interviews, Short spoke candidly about the challenges his family faced following her death.
