WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump was briefed Thursday on potential military strategies concerning Iran, even as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran showed signs of cautious progress.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, Brad Cooper, who leads United States Central Command, presented possible military options during a high-level meeting at the White House. Also present was Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the president’s top military adviser.
The briefing coincided with indirect negotiations between U.S. and Iranian officials in Geneva focused on Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. While no formal agreement was announced, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the discussions as constructive and confirmed that technical-level talks are expected to resume next week in Vienna.
Despite the diplomatic track, Trump has continued to signal that military action remains an option should negotiations fail. In recent weeks, the United States has increased its military footprint in the Middle East, positioning naval assets and fighter aircraft within operational range of Iran.
Behind the scenes, debate continues within Republican circles and among senior advisers over how to approach a potential confrontation. Some voices have argued that Israel should take the lead in any strike targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, with U.S. forces playing a supporting role. It remains unclear whether the president has embraced that strategy.
The possibility of coordinated action between the United States and Israel has not been ruled out. With American forces already stationed strategically across the region, analysts note that operational readiness has clearly been enhanced.
Trump has reportedly expressed frustration over Iran’s ongoing uranium enrichment activities and its refusal to limit ballistic missile development. However, those close to the administration emphasize that the president often weighs a broad range of perspectives before committing to a final course of action.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly reiterated that speculation about the president’s next steps remains premature, stressing that only Trump will determine how the United States proceeds.
As diplomatic channels remain open and military preparations continue in parallel, the coming weeks could prove pivotal in shaping the next phase of U.S.-Iran relations.
