Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to travel to Norway and the United Kingdom later this week to strengthen international cooperation on defence, Arctic security, and economic partnerships.
The visit, scheduled from March 13 to March 15, 2026, comes as Canada and its allies respond to growing global tensions and increased geopolitical competition in the Arctic region.
Officials say the trip reflects Canada’s commitment to protecting its northern sovereignty while enhancing collaboration with allied nations.
Focus on Arctic Security and NATO Cooperation
The prime minister will begin his trip in Bardufoss, located in northern Norway, where he will observe the NATO Exercise Cold Response.
The large-scale military exercise brings together troops from 14 allied nations operating above the Arctic Circle to strengthen NATO’s readiness and operational coordination.
The exercise highlights the alliance’s commitment to protecting its northern flank and strengthening collective defence capabilities.
Participation from NATO’s newest members, Sweden and Finland, is also expected to play a significant role in the drills.
Meetings With Norwegian Leadership
While in Oslo, Prime Minister Carney will hold talks with Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre.
The leaders are expected to discuss ways to deepen the Canada–Norway partnership in areas such as trade, investment, clean energy, aerospace, and critical minerals.
Officials say the discussions will focus on strengthening economic cooperation while addressing shared security concerns in the Arctic region.
Canada–Nordic Summit and Regional Cooperation
During the visit, the Canadian prime minister will also attend the Canada–Nordic Summit.
The summit will bring together Nordic leaders and partners to discuss geopolitical coordination, transatlantic security, and cooperation in the northern regions.
The meeting aims to strengthen ties between Canada and Nordic countries while addressing emerging security challenges in the Arctic.
Engagement With Business Leaders
In addition to political discussions, Prime Minister Carney is expected to meet with business leaders during the trip.
These meetings will highlight Canada’s economic opportunities and promote the country as a destination for global investment.
Key sectors expected to be discussed include defence technology, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence.
Visit to the United Kingdom
After completing his engagements in Norway, the prime minister will travel to London to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The leaders will discuss issues including collective defence, global economic developments, and the evolving situation in the Middle East.
Officials say the discussions will reinforce the long-standing partnership between Canada and the United Kingdom while addressing current international challenges.
