Mark Carney to Visit India, Australia and Japan to Expand Canada’s Global Trade and Security Partnerships
Ottawa, February 23, 2026 — Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a major diplomatic tour to India, Australia, and Japan aimed at strengthening trade ties, attracting foreign investment, and reinforcing Canada’s role in the Indo-Pacific region.
The visit, scheduled from February 26 to March 7, 2026, comes as Canada seeks to diversify its trade partnerships and build a more resilient and independent economy amid global uncertainty.
Strengthening Canada-India Relations
Prime Minister Carney will begin his trip in Mumbai before travelling to New Delhi, where he will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in trade, clean energy, artificial intelligence, advanced technology, talent mobility, culture, and defence collaboration. The Prime Minister will also meet leading business executives to promote Canadian investment opportunities and encourage stronger commercial ties between the two nations.
Canada views India as a critical partner in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in fast-growing sectors such as AI, clean technology, and energy transition.
Deepening Strategic Cooperation with Australia
Following his visit to India, Carney will travel to Sydney and Canberra for meetings with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Talks will centre on defence cooperation, maritime security, critical minerals supply chains, trade, and emerging technologies. Notably, Carney will address both Houses of Australia’s Parliament — marking the first speech by a Canadian Prime Minister to Australia’s Parliament in nearly two decades.
He is also scheduled to meet Australian investors and business leaders to promote two-way trade and attract capital into key Canadian sectors.
Expanding Investment and Security Ties with Japan
The final leg of the tour will take the Prime Minister to Tokyo for discussions with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae.
The leaders will focus on boosting collaboration in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, food security, and critical minerals — sectors considered essential to global economic stability. Security and defence cooperation in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific will also be high on the agenda.
Building a Stronger and More Resilient Economy
The Prime Minister’s office stated that Canada is positioning itself as a reliable global partner, highlighting its abundant natural resources, advanced technological expertise, and highly skilled workforce.
With growing geopolitical tensions and shifting global alliances, the government says strengthening Indo-Pacific partnerships is key to ensuring Canada’s long-term prosperity and security.
The visit underscores Canada’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on traditional markets and cultivate diversified economic relationships across the world.
