United States authorities have arrested Rafael Enrique Gamez Salas, a Venezuelan national accused of leading a major criminal network connected to Tren de Aragua in Chile.

The arrest was carried out following a request from the Chilean government, which is seeking his extradition to face multiple criminal charges, including extortion, kidnapping, criminal association, and homicide.

Officials say the suspect is believed to have played a senior role in “Los Piratas,” identified as one of the main Chile-based cells linked to the Venezuelan transnational criminal organization.

Chile Seeks Extradition Over Multiple Serious Charges

According to investigators, Chile has filed seven charges against Gamez Salas.

The allegations include:

  • criminal association
  • extortion
  • firearm-related offences
  • kidnapping for extortion
  • kidnapping resulting in homicide

Authorities in Chile accuse him of directing criminal operations involving kidnappings and extortion schemes across the country.

Suspect Linked to Former Venezuelan Officer Murder

One of the most serious accusations involves the kidnapping and killing of a former Venezuelan military officer in Santiago during 2024.

Investigators say armed individuals allegedly entered the victim’s apartment during the night while pretending to be police officers.

The attackers reportedly forced entry, restrained the victim, and removed him from the residence before transporting him to another location.

Days later, authorities discovered the victim’s body hidden beneath concrete inside a makeshift structure.

Officials reported evidence of torture and severe violence.

Alleged Leadership Role Inside Criminal Network

Chilean investigators believe Gamez Salas coordinated criminal activity for Los Piratas under instructions from higher-ranking figures inside Tren de Aragua.

Authorities allege he supervised kidnappings, extortion payments, violent attacks, and financial transfers linked to criminal operations.

Investigators also claim intercepted communications showed him discussing direct responsibility for carrying out violent operations.

Additional Violent Crime Allegations

Chile also links the suspect to other serious incidents in 2024, including:

  • a deadly armed confrontation involving a police officer
  • kidnapping operations targeting victims for ransom
  • attempted abduction cases

Officials say several investigations remain connected to his alleged activities.

Previous Criminal Record in the United States

Before this extradition case, Gamez Salas had already faced legal proceedings in the United States.

Authorities say he had previously been deported to Venezuela after entering the United States illegally.

He later returned unlawfully and was convicted in Texas on human smuggling charges.

He also pleaded guilty to illegal re-entry after deportation.

At the time of his latest arrest, he was serving a prison sentence in California.

Extradition Process Underway

The provisional arrest warrant was executed by the United States Marshals Service, and the suspect appeared before a federal magistrate judge in California.

He remains in custody while extradition proceedings continue.

Officials say the case reflects ongoing international cooperation between the United States and Chile in tackling organized transnational crime.

Growing Focus on Tren de Aragua Operations

Tren de Aragua has increasingly become a focus of law enforcement across the Americas because of its alleged involvement in violent organized crime, human trafficking, extortion, and smuggling.

Authorities in several countries continue to investigate the network’s international operations.
