The government of the United Arab Emirates has introduced emergency relief for travellers stranded due to major flight disruptions across West Asia, announcing the temporary waiver of visa overstay fines.

The decision comes as geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States continue to disrupt aviation routes and force airlines to reroute or cancel flights across the region.

The crisis has affected travellers from numerous countries, including Germany, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Qatar, and India.

Airspace Closures Disrupt International Flights

The travel chaos began in late February 2026 when escalating tensions and cross-border military strikes triggered the closure of several airspaces in the Middle East.

Airlines were forced to cancel flights or reroute aircraft to avoid potentially dangerous air corridors. This created widespread disruption for international travellers using major transit hubs in the Gulf region.

Airports in cities such as Dubai and Doha experienced significant flight delays and cancellations as aircraft were redirected to alternative routes.

At one point, aircraft approaching Dubai reportedly circled in holding patterns while authorities assessed airspace safety conditions.

Millions of Travellers Affected Worldwide

The airspace crisis has triggered a ripple effect across global aviation networks.

Passengers travelling between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East have faced cancelled flights, delayed connections, and unexpected travel restrictions.

Countries whose travellers were significantly affected include:

  • Germany
  • United States
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Kuwait
  • United Kingdom
  • Bahrain
  • Qatar
  • India
  • Japan
  • France
  • Canada
  • Australia

Major international carriers such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, British Airways, and Air India have been forced to cancel or adjust numerous flights.

UAE Introduces Emergency Overstay Fine Waiver

To support stranded travellers, the UAE government announced the temporary suspension of its daily visa overstay penalty.

Under normal immigration rules, visitors who remain in the country beyond their permitted stay are charged a fine of AED 50 per day.

However, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security confirmed that the fine will be waived for travellers unable to depart due to the aviation disruptions.

The waiver applies to individuals stranded in the UAE starting from February 28, 2026.

Who Benefits from the Waiver

The emergency policy covers several categories of travellers affected by flight cancellations and airspace restrictions.

These include:

  • Tourists holding short-term visas
  • Visitors on travel or family visas
  • Residents whose permits have recently expired
  • Individuals waiting for exit permits
  • Other travellers unable to leave due to flight disruptions

Officials said affected individuals may also request refunds if they already paid overstay penalties during the crisis.

To apply for refunds, travellers may need to present documents such as airline cancellation notices, travel bookings, or hotel receipts.

Airlines Gradually Restoring Flights

Airlines have begun slowly restoring services as some air corridors reopen across the region.

Several carriers are now operating limited flights while authorities continue to monitor security conditions in regional airspace.

Special repatriation flights have also been organised to help passengers return home safely.

However, aviation analysts warn that travel disruptions may continue for several weeks while airlines rebuild schedules and reopen routes.

Advice for Stranded Travellers

Authorities are advising passengers caught in the disruption to remain informed and maintain contact with airlines and embassies.

Travellers are encouraged to:

  • Monitor airline updates for rescheduled flights
  • Keep documentation related to cancellations
  • Contact their embassy for assistance if needed
  • Consider alternative travel routes where available

Officials say staying informed and maintaining proper documentation will help travellers navigate the ongoing disruptions.

Regional Governments Respond to Crisis

Several Middle Eastern countries have also introduced temporary measures to assist stranded visitors.

For example, authorities in Saudi Arabia and Qatar have announced visa extensions for travellers unable to leave due to cancelled flights.

Meanwhile, Kuwait and Bahrain have introduced flexible visa policies and travel assistance programmes.

These measures are intended to reduce stress for travellers while regional aviation networks recover from the disruption.

Global Travel Slowly Stabilising

Although some flights are gradually resuming, aviation authorities say the situation remains fluid.

The ongoing geopolitical tensions and recent airspace closures have created one of the most complex travel disruptions in recent years.

For now, relief measures such as the UAE’s overstay fine waiver are helping thousands of stranded travellers manage unexpected delays while waiting for normal travel operations to resume.
