Mass Shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School Leaves 10 Dead, Multiple Injured

TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. — A devastating mass shooting in the small community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, on February 10, 2026, has left 10 people dead — including the suspected shooter — and more than 25 others injured, authorities say.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, a public school serving Grades 7 through 12, shortly after 1:20 p.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday.

Sequence of Events

Officers entered the school as part of the initial response and located multiple victims. Six people were found dead inside the school, and one more died later while being transported to hospital. Two additional victims were found deceased at a residence believed to be connected to the incident. An individual believed to be the suspect was also found dead at the school from a self-inflicted injury, police said.

The RCMP issued an emergency alert for the community, instructing residents to shelter in place and follow police directions. The alert was lifted later in the evening once authorities confirmed there were no outstanding suspects or ongoing threats.

Injuries and Medical Response

At least 25 people were assessed and treated for injuries, including two airlifted to larger hospitals with serious or life-threatening injuries. Others were triaged at local medical facilities for non-life-threatening wounds.

Community Impact and Response

Tumbler Ridge, a tight-knit community of roughly 2,400 residents, has been deeply shaken by the violence. Schools in the area remain closed for the rest of the week as officials work to support students, families, and residents affected by the tragedy.

British Columbia Premier David Eby called the shooting an “unimaginable tragedy” and urged all British Columbians to support the people of Tumbler Ridge. Officials are mobilizing trauma and crisis support resources in the region.

Ongoing Investigation

The RCMP’s Major Crime Section has taken over the investigation, which remains active as authorities work to determine the full circumstances and possible motives behind the attack. Police have said they have identified the suspect but have not released a name or further details.

Mass shootings are rare in Canada, and this incident is among the deadliest in recent decades, prompting national sorrow and calls for solidarity with the victims and their families.
