Pakistan Hold Nerve to Beat Netherlands After Late Drama in T20 World Cup Opener

Pakistan escaped a major scare against the Netherlands in their opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, securing a narrow three-wicket victory after a costly fielding lapse turned the game in their favour.

Chasing 148, Pakistan were reeling at 114 for seven when the Netherlands dropped a crucial catch of Faheem Ashraf. The missed opportunity proved decisive as Faheem smashed an unbeaten 29 off just 11 balls, striking three sixes and two fours. He added a vital 34-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Shaheen Afridi to steer Pakistan home.

Early Momentum, Mid-Innings Collapse

Pakistan had looked in control early in the chase thanks to a brisk start from Sahibzada Farhan, who scored 47 off 31 balls, and Saim Ayub, who added 24 off 13. However, a flurry of wickets shifted momentum back to the Dutch side.

Paul van Meekeren and Aryan Dutt led the Netherlands’ bowling effort, claiming two wickets each and tightening the screws as Pakistan stumbled toward defeat.

Netherlands Fall Short With the Bat

Earlier, the Netherlands endured a challenging innings on a pitch offering assistance to bowlers. Scott Edwards’ side had ambitions of pushing past 170, but regular wickets stalled their progress as they were bowled out for 147 in 19.5 overs.

Edwards top-scored with 37 off 29 balls, while Bas de Leede (30 off 25), Michael Levitt (24 off 15) and Colin Ackermann (20 off 14) provided valuable contributions.

Pakistan’s spinners played a decisive role, with Salman Mirza picking up three wickets. Shadab Khan, Abrar Ahmed and Saim Ayub claimed two wickets apiece to keep the Netherlands in check.

Missed Chances Prove Costly

Despite a strong bowling and fielding effort for much of the match, the Netherlands were undone by dropped catches and extra runs in the closing stages.

Both teams struggled to produce a major batting performance, but Pakistan’s composure under pressure ultimately made the difference as they opened their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought win.
