The government of Saskatchewan has announced significant progress in strengthening economic ties with India following a trade and investment mission led by Premier Scott Moe.
The delegation returned after completing a week-long mission aimed at expanding partnerships in sectors including energy, agriculture, technology, and education.
Officials say the visit resulted in several new agreements and collaborations that could boost economic opportunities for both regions.
$2.6 Billion Uranium Agreement Signed
One of the most notable outcomes of the mission was a major uranium agreement between Cameco and India’s Department of Atomic Energy.
The agreement, valued at approximately $2.6 billion, will strengthen energy cooperation between Saskatchewan and India and support nuclear power development.
Uranium exports remain one of Saskatchewan’s key contributions to global energy security.
Partnerships in Technology and Energy
Several organizations from Saskatchewan also signed Memorandums of Understanding with Indian institutions to promote research and technology development.
The Petroleum Technology Research Centre partnered with the IIT Bombay National Centre of Excellence in CCUS to collaborate on carbon capture, utilization, and storage research.
Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan Research Council signed agreements with Midwest Energy Private Limited to explore nuclear microreactor technologies and with Nonferrous Materials Technologies Development Centre to collaborate on rare earth processing technologies.
Academic and Agricultural Research Collaboration
Educational institutions were also part of the mission, strengthening academic and research partnerships between Canada and India.
The University of Saskatchewan signed agreements with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics and the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management to work together on agricultural innovation and food technology.
These collaborations aim to develop new technologies that support sustainable agriculture and global food security.
Education Sector Partnerships
Additional agreements were reached to expand educational cooperation.
Saskatchewan Polytechnic partnered with institutions including Cambridge International School, Atria University, and Axia International to strengthen opportunities for post-secondary education and training.
Officials say these partnerships could create new learning opportunities for students and enhance global academic exchanges.
Strong and Growing Trade Relationship
Trade between Saskatchewan and India has grown significantly over the years.
Since 2007, exports from Saskatchewan to India have exceeded $18 billion, reflecting the strong economic relationship between the two regions.
Provincial leaders say Saskatchewan continues to position itself as a reliable supplier of food and energy products to support India’s growing needs.
Mission Aims to Expand Future Opportunities
Premier Scott Moe emphasized that the mission represents an important step forward in strengthening Saskatchewan’s partnership with India.
The trip, which ran from February 28 to March 6, 2026, focused on expanding trade, investment, and research collaborations that could benefit businesses, institutions, and communities in both regions.
Officials say the agreements signed during the mission are expected to create new economic opportunities and deepen the long-term partnership between Saskatchewan and India.
