CALGARY – One of Calgary’s most recognizable country music landmarks is preparing for a major move. Ranchman’s Cookhouse and Dancehall will relocate in early 2027 after operating for more than five decades at its Macleod Trail S.E. location.
The move is part of a broader redevelopment plan for the current site, which will be transformed into a mixed-use project known as Ranchman’s Village. While the venue’s new address has not yet been disclosed, management confirmed it will relocate to a larger existing building nearby.
A Calgary Staple Since 1972
Founded in April 1972 by Harris Dvorkin and Kevin Baker, Ranchman’s evolved from a self-serve cafeteria into a 1,000-seat country dance hall. Over the years, it became synonymous with line dancing, mechanical bull riding and live country music performances.
The venue has hosted major artists including Shania Twain, Keith Urban and Billy Ray Cyrus. It has also been recognized 13 times as Country Club of the Year by the Canadian Country Music Association.
Beyond music, Ranchman’s is deeply tied to Calgary’s Western identity and annual Calgary Stampede celebrations. Its memorabilia-filled interior and distinctive red vertical sign have made it a fixture along Macleod Trail.
The venue has also appeared in films such as Cool Runnings and Brokeback Mountain, further cementing its cultural status.
Final Year at Current Location
Ranchman’s director of marketing Wendy Daniel said the venue plans a full calendar of events throughout 2026 before closing out its final year in the original building.
Local musicians say the venue has played a crucial role in launching careers. Calgary artist Jaiden Riley, a recent winner of the Ranchman’s Rising Star competition, described the bar as a generational gathering place and a cornerstone for country music talent in the city.
Fellow musician Stephanie Merkus called it a “local watering hole” that connects performers with the community, expressing hope that its honky-tonk atmosphere will carry over to the new space.
Redevelopment Plans for Ranchman’s Village
The redevelopment project is being led by Deveraux Group of Companies in partnership with Lansdowne Equity Ventures. The plan envisions a pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use development featuring street-level commercial spaces with residential units above.
Developers say the goal is to create a “main street” feel along Macleod Trail, incorporating additional retailers such as restaurants, shops and service businesses to help revitalize the corridor.
According to project leaders, Ranchman’s is expected to complete operations at the existing site at the end of 2026, transition into its new nearby location in early 2027, and potentially return to the redeveloped site once construction is complete. Initial occupancies for Ranchman’s Village are targeted for summer 2028.
Developers have been working closely with venue operators to preserve key elements of the original space, including memorabilia and even the possibility of relocating the historic dance floor to maintain the venue’s signature character.
Looking Ahead
While change is on the horizon, Ranchman’s management says the heart of the venue — its Western spirit, live music tradition and community roots — will remain intact.
For many Calgarians, the move marks the end of an era at the Macleod Trail address, but also the beginning of a new chapter for one of the city’s most iconic nightlife destinations.
