Bollywood Actor Rajpal Yadav Makes Emotional Statement Before Surrendering to Tihar Jail

MUMBAI — Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav made an emotional appeal before surrendering himself to authorities on Tuesday in connection with a long-running cheque bounce case, saying he has no money and no one to turn to as he faces the legal consequences.

Yadav appeared at the Tihar jail surrender point after the court dismissed his latest request for more time to arrange funds in a dispute dating back more than a decade.

Addressing officers and onlookers before handing himself over, Yadav said, “Sir, what can I do? I don’t have money. There is no other way… I’m alone in this.” His remarks underscored the financial and personal strain the case has placed on him.

Background of the Case

The matter traces back to 2010, when Yadav reportedly took a loan of about Rs 5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata. The film failed at the box office, and Yadav struggled to repay the loan. As a result, several cheques he issued to the lender bounced, triggering legal action under the provisions of India’s Negotiable Instruments Act.

In April 2018, a Magistrate’s Court in Delhi convicted Yadav and his wife under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act and sentenced them to six months in prison. The actor repeatedly challenged the conviction and sought relief through the courts for several years, but delays in repayment led the court to question his seriousness about settling the dues.

The outstanding amount in the case reportedly approached Rs 9 crore before portions of the debt — including Rs 75 lakh in 2025 — were paid. Nevertheless, the court ultimately ruled against further extensions, directing Yadav to surrender.

Yadav’s surrender marks a significant development in a case that has followed the actor for much of his career, highlighting ongoing legal and financial challenges behind the scenes.
