NDP Reaffirms Support for Ukraine on Fourth Anniversary of Russia’s Invasion

Canada’s New Democratic Party is marking four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine with a renewed call for accountability, stronger sanctions and continued support for Ukrainians at home and abroad.

In a statement released on the anniversary of the invasion by Russia, NDP foreign affairs critic Alexandre Boulerice said Ukrainians have shown courage and resilience in the face of ongoing aggression.

Boulerice, who represents the Montreal riding of Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie, said Ukrainians have spent four years resisting what he described as an illegal invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He praised the people of Ukraine for defending their sovereignty while upholding international law and democratic values.

The NDP statement also highlighted Canada’s support for Ukraine since the war began, noting that Canadians have stood in solidarity with Ukrainians both overseas and within Canada’s borders.

Boulerice said New Democrats have consistently pushed the federal government to take stronger action against Moscow, including imposing tougher sanctions and seizing Russian-owned assets in Canada.

The statement also took aim at the Conservative Party, criticizing what the NDP described as proposals that would make Canada less welcoming to refugees. Boulerice emphasized that New Democrats remain committed to ensuring Ukrainians fleeing the war — along with other newcomers — receive the support they need, including access to essential services.

Concluding the message, Boulerice reaffirmed the party’s solidarity with Ukraine and its people, ending with the phrase “Slava Ukraini,” a Ukrainian expression meaning “Glory to Ukraine.”

The anniversary comes as the conflict continues with no clear resolution in sight.
