Civil rights icon Reverend Jesse Jackson, who passed away on February 17, 2026, envisioned an America where the marginalized were at the center of politics. His progressive vision, far ahead of its time, laid the groundwork for the Democratic Party as we know it today through initiatives like his National Rainbow Coalition, launched after his first presidential campaign in 1984.
“The Rainbow Coalition embodies a national politics that is radically inclusive,” said Charles McKinney, history professor at Rhodes College. “Jackson had something for the middle class, the elite, and working-class folks. That was the core of his politics.”
Civil Rights Roots and Early Activism
Jackson’s experience in the civil rights movement shaped his lifelong advocacy. As a student at North Carolina A&T, he participated in the Greensboro sit-ins, later becoming one of the youngest lieutenants in Martin Luther King Jr.’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
In 1966, King appointed him director of Operation Breadbasket in Chicago, aiming to improve economic conditions through boycotts and job initiatives. Jackson later transformed this program into Operation Push, the first national coalition to focus on economic empowerment for marginalized communities.
“The civil rights movement didn’t end with Martin Luther King,” said Steven Lawson, history professor at Rutgers. “Jackson continued the fight in the 1970s, focusing on economics, jobs, and community empowerment.”
Mobilizing Black Voters and Shaping the Democratic Party
During the 1980s Reagan era, Jackson recognized a rightward shift in the Democratic Party. He sought to build a multiracial, cross-class coalition including working-class and college-educated Americans to give a voice to the majority of the country.
His efforts mobilized millions of Black voters, particularly in the South, helping Democrats regain power in the 1986 Senate elections. Jackson personally helped register around 2 million Black voters, solidifying their role as a backbone of the Democratic Party.
“The Jesse Jackson effect transformed Black voter participation and reshaped American politics,” said Kevin K Gaines, University of Virginia professor.
Advocating for Gay Rights
Jackson was a pioneer for LGBTQ+ rights, becoming the first person to mention “lesbian” and “gay” at a Democratic National Convention in 1984. “The rainbow includes lesbians and gays,” he declared, calling for equal protection under the law.
He continued his advocacy for decades, speaking at the 1993 March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay, and Bi Equal Rights, supporting Massachusetts’ legalization of gay marriage, and backing Barack Obama when he publicly supported same-sex marriage in 2012.
Championing the Working Class
Jackson consistently fought for working-class Americans across racial and economic lines. “It’s us against the billionaires,” reflected Keneshia Grant, political science professor at Howard University. Jackson emphasized policies to combat economic inequality and lift marginalized communities.
This message resonated during the 1988 Michigan Democratic caucus, where he won a surprising victory by advocating economic reforms and fair treatment for the poor and working class.
Expanding Global Awareness
Jackson’s activism extended internationally. His presidential campaigns were the first to include an Arab American committee and pushed for Democratic Party support for Palestinian rights, calling for self-determination and mutual recognition between Israel and Palestine. Though unsuccessful at the national level, several state parties adopted platforms supporting Palestinian liberation.
“Jackson was advocating for Palestinian rights long before it became mainstream in the Democratic Party,” McKinney noted.
Jesse Jackson’s Lasting Legacy
Through decades of activism, Jesse Jackson reshaped American politics. His inclusive vision, focus on social and economic justice, advocacy for marginalized communities, and commitment to civil and human rights influenced leaders from Barack Obama to Bernie Sanders. The Democratic Party’s modern progressive platform continues to reflect Jackson’s groundbreaking Rainbow Coalition ideals.
