The Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP) hosted a community Iftar dinner last night, bringing together community leaders, guests, and members of Calgary’s diverse Muslim and Sikh communities during the holy month of Ramadan. Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi warmly welcomed all attendees and highlighted the importance of unity, respect, and understanding among different cultures and faiths in Alberta.
During his remarks, Nenshi acknowledged the valuable role Muslim and Sikh communities play in Calgary and across the province. He noted that their contributions in business, education, social services, and community work continue to strengthen Alberta’s multicultural society. He also spoke about Ramadan as a time of reflection, compassion, generosity, and service to others, values that help bring communities closer together.
Several Calgary Members of the Legislative Assembly attended the Iftar gathering and spent time greeting guests and community leaders. Those present included Irfan Sabir, Gurinder Brar, Parmeet Singh Boparai, Kathleen Ganley, Julia Hayter, Court Ellingson, Nagwan Al‑Guneid, Diana Batten, and Janet Eremenko.
After the dinner, well-known community figure Syed Soharwardy recited prayers and offered a special dua, praying for peace, harmony, and prosperity for the community and the province. Following the prayer, guests had the opportunity to engage in friendly conversations with Members of the Legislative Assembly, discussing community issues and sharing ideas in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The evening concluded with a spirit of unity and appreciation, reflecting the true values of Ramadan.
