A senior leader of the Chaldean Catholic Church in the United States has been arrested in California over multiple financial crime allegations.
Authorities confirmed that Emanuel Shaleta, bishop of the Chaldean Catholic Diocese of St. Peter the Apostle in San Diego, was detained on March 5 at the city’s international airport while reportedly attempting to leave the country.
Law enforcement officials said the arrest followed an investigation into alleged financial misconduct involving church funds.
Multiple Charges Filed Against Bishop
According to authorities, the 69-year-old bishop faces several serious charges under California law.
These include eight counts of embezzlement, eight counts of money laundering, and an additional charge related to aggravated white-collar crime.
The enhanced charge applies in cases involving large-scale fraud or embezzlement where financial losses exceed $100,000.
Officials say the law allows authorities to freeze and seize assets connected to the alleged crimes.
Shaleta is currently being held in custody at a jail facility in San Diego, with bail set at $125,000. Any release will require approval from the court.
Court Appearance Scheduled
The bishop is scheduled to appear for arraignment on March 9 at the Superior Court located in El Cajon, a city in San Diego County.
During the hearing, prosecutors are expected to formally present the charges while the court determines the next legal steps in the case.
Investigation Began After Church Complaint
Authorities said the investigation began in August 2025 when a representative connected to St. Peter Chaldean Church in El Cajon contacted the sheriff’s office.
The complaint included documents and statements suggesting possible financial irregularities involving church funds.
After an initial review, the case was assigned to the fraud investigation unit of the local sheriff’s department.
Investigators spent several months examining financial records and gathering evidence before moving forward with the arrest.
Church Leadership Responds to Allegations
The leadership of the Chaldean Catholic Church issued a statement acknowledging that complaints had been filed against the bishop.
Officials said the concerns involved alleged mishandling of diocesan finances as well as other claims that had circulated online.
Church authorities stressed that all allegations must be examined through appropriate legal and ecclesiastical processes before conclusions are reached.
They also confirmed that investigations have been conducted with the cooperation of church leadership and relevant authorities.
Vatican Investigation and Resignation
Reports indicate that the bishop had previously submitted his resignation earlier this year following an internal investigation ordered by the Vatican.
The probe reportedly examined accusations of financial misconduct and personal behaviour concerns within the diocese.
Before his appointment in San Diego in 2017, Shaleta served in the Chaldean Catholic Church’s diocese in Toronto.
Background on the Chaldean Catholic Church
The Chaldean Catholic Church is one of several Eastern Catholic churches that operate in communion with the Roman Catholic Church.
Together with the Latin Church, these communities form part of the global Catholic Church led by the pope in Rome.
The church serves large Chaldean and Iraqi Christian communities across the Middle East, Europe, and North America.
Case Continues to Develop
Legal proceedings in the case are expected to continue in the coming weeks as investigators and prosecutors present evidence related to the allegations.
Authorities have emphasized that the charges remain allegations until proven in court.
The case has drawn significant attention within both religious and legal circles due to the senior leadership position held by the bishop and the scale of the alleged financial misconduct.
