Calgary is under Stage 4 water restrictions as crews begin essential repair work on the Bearspaw South Feeder Main, a project expected to last approximately four weeks.

Water Use Update

Yesterday, Calgary residents and businesses used 496 million litres of water, keeping consumption within the safe and sustainable green zone. City officials thanked residents, businesses, and regional partners for their ongoing efforts to conserve water during this critical repair project.

Residents are encouraged to continue water-saving measures and share tips with family, friends, coworkers, and customers. Simple actions, such as:

  • Flushing toilets only when necessary – each skipped flush saves nearly 5 litres of water.
  • Keeping showers to three minutes – each minute shaved off saves about 7 litres.
  • Running dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads – dishwashers use around 28 litres per cycle, while front-load washing machines use 62 litres.

Even small reductions, like saving 25 litres per person per day, can significantly stabilize Calgary’s water system.

Construction and Traffic Update

Repair crews have begun adjusting water flow through Calgary’s drinking water system while the feeder main is out of service.

  • Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant pumps have been shut down and valves closed to isolate the feeder main.
  • Draining of the first pipe section is complete, with excavation ongoing near Sarcee Trail and Point McKay Park. Remaining sections are expected to be drained by the end of the day.
  • Next steps include reinforcing the pipe with a steel cage and concrete casing.

Road Closures and Detours

Construction has affected traffic patterns in the area. Drivers are advised of the following:

  • Lane reductions on 16 Avenue N.W. near the Sarcee Trail interchange, with one lane open in each direction.
  • Exit ramps from 16 Avenue N.W. onto Sarcee Trail and from Sarcee Trail onto westbound 16 Avenue N.W. are closed.
  • 16 Avenue westbound remains open but lane changes may slow traffic.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, follow posted signage, and exercise caution near construction sites. Cyclists should dismount and use designated ramps. Only City crews and contractors with proper protective equipment are allowed in active work areas.

City officials thank residents for respecting crews and ensuring the work proceeds safely and efficiently.
