The temporary closure of the Al‑Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem has triggered strong reactions from political analysts, religious leaders and observers across the Middle East, with many warning that the move could further escalate tensions in the region.

The restrictions were imposed shortly after military tensions intensified between Israel and Iran, when Israeli authorities closed access to several religious sites, including the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron. Security forces ordered worshippers to leave the compounds and restricted public access, citing emergency security conditions related to the regional conflict.

Critics of the decision argue that the move goes far beyond temporary wartime precautions. They say it reflects a broader political strategy aimed at changing the historical status quo governing religious sites in East Jerusalem, particularly the Al-Aqsa compound, one of the holiest sites in Islam.

Many Palestinians say that limiting access to mosques during times of conflict does not improve civilian safety. Unlike Israeli cities, most Palestinian neighborhoods in the occupied territories lack bomb shelters or emergency infrastructure, leaving many residents without safe refuge during periods of military escalation.

Religious scholars and political analysts note that debates over the Al-Aqsa compound have intensified in recent years. Some Israeli religious nationalist groups refer to the site as Temple Mount, reflecting a long-standing ideological dispute over the identity and future control of the compound.

Observers say such terminology highlights a deeper political and religious divide over the site’s status. For Muslims around the world, the compound represents the location of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, which together form one of Islam’s most sacred sanctuaries.

The latest closures also occurred during the holy month of Ramadan, a period when large numbers of worshippers traditionally gather at the mosque for nightly prayers and Friday congregations. Restrictions during Ramadan have historically triggered widespread criticism and protests.

Over the past decade, the management and access arrangements of the mosque have repeatedly become flashpoints between Israeli authorities and Palestinian religious institutions. The Islamic Waqf, the body responsible for administering the site, has frequently disputed security measures imposed by Israeli forces.

Previous closures have also taken place under exceptional circumstances. In 2017, new security installations placed at the entrance of the compound sparked widespread demonstrations, eventually leading to the removal of the measures. The mosque was again closed temporarily during the global pandemic and during earlier regional conflicts.

Analysts warn that repeated restrictions risk deepening tensions not only in Jerusalem but throughout the wider region. The Al-Aqsa compound holds enormous religious and political significance, and any changes to access arrangements are closely watched across the Muslim world.

As the regional conflict continues, many observers believe that the situation surrounding the mosque will remain a sensitive issue capable of influencing public sentiment far beyond Jerusalem.
