Everyone who belongs to the subcontinent knows Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, widely known as Bacha Khan or Sarhadi Gandhi. Yesterday evening in Calgary, the third-largest city of Canada and the oil hub of Alberta, a wonderful and knowledgeable evening was organized by the Awami National Party Alberta chapter.
The event, held under the banner of “Bacha Khan Night,” brought together community leaders, political representatives, social activists, and families to reflect on the enduring philosophy and lifelong struggle of Bacha Khan. Known for his unwavering commitment to nonviolence, peace, and human dignity, Bacha Khan remains one of the most respected figures in the history of the subcontinent. His message continues to resonate across generations, particularly among Pashtun communities living abroad.
Premier of Alberta Danielle Smith’s Special Adviser, Happy Mann, attended the gathering as a distinguished guest. During the ceremony, he awarded a special acknowledgment from the Government of Alberta to ANP Alberta President Sher Akber Khan in recognition of his efforts to promote cultural awareness, community engagement, and the teachings of Bacha Khan in Canada. This moment was met with applause from the audience and reflected the growing recognition of multicultural contributions within Alberta.
In his remarks, Happy Mann spoke in detail about Bacha Khan’s philosophy of nonviolence, tolerance, and service to humanity. He emphasized that Bacha Khan’s struggle was not limited to the subcontinent but carried universal values that are relevant around the world today. He praised the Awami National Party and the Pashtun community for keeping this legacy alive through such meaningful events. He also highlighted how the principles of peace and coexistence are essential in modern societies, especially in diverse countries like Canada.
Also present at the event was Irfan Sabir, Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Alberta New Democratic Party. Representing his party, he expressed his appreciation for the initiative and shared his thoughts on the importance of remembering leaders like Bacha Khan. He spoke about human rights, social justice, and the need for dialogue and understanding in today’s world. His presence highlighted the inclusive and cross-party support for community-based cultural and intellectual events.
Sher Akber Khan, President of ANP Alberta, warmly welcomed all the guests and participants. In his address, he thanked the Government of Alberta, community members, and organizers for their support in making the event successful. He reiterated the importance of educating younger generations about the life and teachings of Bacha Khan, emphasizing that his philosophy offers solutions to many of the challenges faced by society today.
