Charanjit Ram has been charged after an overnight incident in Calgary where police say a vehicle entered an active collision investigation scene despite road barricades.
The incident happened early Wednesday morning at about 2:45 a.m. near Stoney Trail and McKnight Boulevard Northeast while officers were investigating a fatal traffic collision.
According to investigators, police had already blocked the roadway and established barricades to secure the area when a vehicle allegedly drove through the closure.
Authorities say the driver continued through the restricted zone at high speed while officers were working at the scene.
Police stated that officers present in the investigation area were placed at potential risk because of the vehicle’s movement through the closed roadway.
Investigators also believe the incident may have affected evidence connected to the fatal collision investigation already underway.
The driver was immediately taken into custody and the vehicle involved was seized by police for further examination.
Ram, aged 39, now faces one charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and one charge of obstructing a peace officer.
Police officials stressed that road closures following serious collisions are necessary not only for public safety but also to preserve the integrity of forensic work being carried out at the location.
Investigators say barricades are placed to prevent unauthorized access and to protect officers, emergency personnel, and evidence collection teams.
Police leadership also reminded drivers that ignoring road closures can create additional danger during already sensitive investigations.
Ram is scheduled to appear before the court in May, where the charges will proceed through the legal process.
The case has renewed discussion about the importance of respecting emergency road closures across Calgary, especially during overnight investigations when visibility is reduced and officers remain active on scene. 🚓⚖️🚧📍
